In a world where success often means being seen and heard, the power of silence can be easily overlooked. But silence, when chosen intentionally, is a true sign of humility. Humility, which is simply having a modest view of your own importance, is often mistaken for weakness. In reality, it’s a strength that comes from knowing who you are without needing constant validation.
Pride, on the other hand, is the force that drives us to always want the last word, to make sure we’re noticed, to put ourselves first. But the Bible is clear about the dangers of pride. Proverbs 16:18 warns us, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Pride can lead us down a path of loneliness and regret.
In contrast, humility invites us to think less about ourselves and more about others. Proverbs 17:28 reminds us, “Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.” Choosing silence isn’t about having nothing to say; it’s about showing respect, offering grace, and loving others as the Bible teaches us to do.
The best way to love others is to practice humility. That means stepping back, letting go of the need to always be right, and giving grace in every conversation. By doing so, we loosen pride’s hold on us and grow closer to the kind of love and humility that God calls us to.
